WPCA Challenge #3 Rafting The Grey River

Time to load into the vehicles to go to the polytech to meet the instructors and to replace our helmets and lifejackets. We arrived at the polytech and we went and met the instructors I already knew two of the Polytechnic instructors from the previous trip of Rock Climbing/Abseiling at Charleston their names were Jake and Gabby the other instructor's names were Nathan, Jake, Gabbie and I forgot the others.

It was time to go to the meeting location of getting into the rafts when we got there we changed into our wetsuit and thermals then we ate. Then we played a weird game that I didn’t like it's when you have a buddy anyway the game was the teacher/Instructor was said buddy up that's when your buddy that is standing behind you jumps up on your back then they can say buddy down it's when you jump down, They could say buddy swap that's when the buddy swaps so the buddy that was behind will now be in front, Then they can say buddy around that's when you run around the circle and then jump on your buddies back that game is only good if you have a friend.

We hopped on the rafts and they told us how to use the raft you have to sit on the edge of the raft to even it out. There was this seat called the chicken seat if the raft is about to tip or if you going to fall out most people go and hop on the chicken seat you are meant to fall out that's the fun of it.

We reached camp and we set up our tents my tent had Mac, Ollie, Isaac, Daniel it took ages to set in it up poles kept snapping when we're setting it up we all shared our feeling with a few choice words. Then we set up the fire and it was getting dark so that's when we started to cook dinner my food group was Daniel, Chole, Sam and I. We had cooked sausages.

When we went to the campfire we told storeys that have never been told we shared jokes Sam shared a few jokes that are really funny. Then we started to roast marshmallows I had a fair few Then we played spotlight and other games then we went back to the fire then we went to bed My tent group were talking for ages we all went to bed about 9.00 and we went to sleep at about 11.00 we would of still been talking right up till morning if Mr McAulay didn’t kick our tent and told us to go to sleep.

Morning came around we cook pancakes for breakfast we had pancakes they had started off good but then near the bottom of the bottle it was to think to pour the mix out so we got Daniel to go down to the river to add more water but Daniel put way to much water and the mix was really runny and it was too runny to call it pancakes but then about 5 watery pancakes down the road I fixed it and made a big non-runny pancake it went smoothly.

Then we pack down out tents and put down our tent which was easier then putting it up Daniel started getting frustrated and stressed when it came to packing after we had packed our tents down our gear we play some games the first game was buddy up and buddies down then we play capture the flag one of the bases was on the beach and the other base was on the flat ground where we camped the other team won because they had flatter ground to run on. Then it was time to go on the rafts it was the same story as yesterday few rapids and that was about it overall it was a fun experience and I would most defiantly do it again and I recommend you to do rafting.

  1. Kia ora, Kaia. I had a ball on this trip. I do think you were exaggerating a little bit, when you said that Sam's jokes were 'really funny'. Sleep is a helpful thing when you have to steer a raft full of kids. The guides were happy to get as much sleep as they did. I hope to see you on the river again, in the future.

    Cheers,

    Mr McAulay
